EAT: Ma’ Plucker is a new chicken diner that has opened in Soho. When I saw yet another chicken place on Beak Street (lol) I wonder if they looked at London foodie data and thought: ‘OMG – people in Soho eat a LOT of chicken, let’s open there!’… and then realised it’s because they’re less than one minute from Grillshack, Whyte and Brown and Stax Diner.
That aside, Ma’ Plucker is actually VERY good. It;s their first week, so until August 2nd they’re doing 50% off for their soft launch. Service is a bit crap at the moment, but that’s to be expected. The food, however, is brilliant.
The menu works like this: choose your base (salad, burger bun or waffle), choose your sauce (ranging from sweet chilli maple to chipotle) and then choose the kind of chicken you want (buttermilk fried, slow pulled chicken, grilled or, err, halloumi). They have a wide range of sides – my friend and I went for fries and coleslaw.
The food was brilliant. I went for 150g slow cooked pulled chicken with maple sauce, fries and coleslaw. Fries and coleslaw were nice, but nothing special (no Honest Burger rosemary fries going on here). HOWEVER: the brioche bun was delicious and held together really well. The pulled chicken was perfect – tasty, smoky and tasted incredible. And only £6 (50% = £3, AMAZING).
Go to Ma’Plucker while it’s cheap and then you’ll (probably) go again when it’s full price. Hopefully by then the service is a bit quicker too and the chicken stays as delicious as it is now! My entire meal (chicken burger, fries, coleslaw and a soft drink) came to £9. Dreamy.
SEE: Fancy seeing some conceptual artwork during your lunch break (if you work in Soho)? Then familiarise yourself with Brewer Street Car park – on the top floor of this public car park lives The Vinyl Factory, and they host a number of different exhibitions over the course of the year.
At the moment (until August 2nd) it’s home to Carsten Nicolai’s ‘Unicolor’:
“Nicolai’s ingenious examination the psychology of colour perception. Submerged in panoramic wavelengths of blue, red, green and grey that grow, evaporate and meld into one another, the viewer is confronted with an infinite, visceral expanse of colour and sound.”
There’s two sections to the exhibition – one room which shows the above: a series of colourscapes (not sure if that’s even a word, probs not) which change every few minutes, in tandem with a static, electronic soundscape which is incredibly relaxing. Honestly – go, for a full hour and just chill out. The colours keep you stimulated and the sound does the opposite and just fills your head with relaxing white noise; it’s glorious.
The other part of the exhibition is in the room next door (above). The room is silent… until you pick up a specially crafted colourful vinyl, put it on the turntable, and play around with the different sounds. You’re essentially a DJ spinning colourful vinyl. Best of all, the exhibition is free (12 – 6pm).
Get yourself down there, spin some decks and chill out surrounded by colour and sound. Yay.
LISTEN: I love both hip-hop and classical music. I have eclectic taste, what can I say. So when I came across this instrumental medley of 30 hip-hop tracks I absolutely fell in love.
Orchestrated and conducted by JIMEK (Radzimir Dębski). Performed by NOSPR – Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. For a breakdown of the tracks included, visit here (or watch the video).
LOVE: Next week one of my best friends is getting married. He’s one half of the best couples I know (the other being Ryan and Lisi, god bless ’em).
The wedding has been a looong time coming. They’ve been together about 7 years now and I couldn’t be more stoked to be celebrating how amazing they are next week. I can’t actually find a recent photo of me, Nick and Tim, so you’ll just have to make do with me and Nick (until the wedding when there will be ENDLESS PHOTOS).
I remember when Nick and Tim had been dating for about three weeks. We were sitting in the living room of our Uni house – Nick was smitten and I told me that he thought he was in love with Tim. I, cynical sarcastic beeyach I am, told him that’s mental and he got angry about it. Totally fair enough. But I am bloody happy to look back, admit I was fully 100% wrong and that after seven years of being in love they’re finally getting married.
I don’t want to turn this blog post into a rant about gay rights, but a few years ago a couple like Nick and Tim, who are so solid and secure, couldn’t get married. Thank goodness Britain has (far too slowly for my liking) caught up and now no matter what your sexuality, you can do the whole marriage thing. I don’t happen to believe in the institution of marriage (only because I’m a very non-traditional leftie, big up to anyone that decides it’s for them) but I resolutely believe that you should be free to do whatever you want so long as your actions don’t hurt anybody else.
So, this Sunday I am going to watch one of my best friends get married. I am going to be happy, eat, drink, dance, take waaay too many photos and drunkenly tweet about how perfect they are. (Please all keep your fingers crossed for good weather. I will accept a tiny bit of drizzle for half an hour, but only because it’ll create a rainbow and I can take the piss out of Nick regarding how gay his wedding is).
I also solemnly swear to not say this at any point the entire day. #OnlySingleWomanAtTheWedding
